HUNGER!!!!!!!!

With the dollar at 91 Ksh the economy in our country is deteriorating. The cost of living is now very high starting with high fuel prices and the skyrocketing food prices in Kenya. Some people are going hungry everyday due to lack of water let alone food. When shopping yesterday, I noticed that some products had increased in prices while some were not even available. The items that were available, one was only allowed to purchase a maximum of only 2 packets(am talking about sugar).

One of the commodities whose price has spiked obscenely in the last four months is maize flour by a staggering 70 percent.

But it’s not the first time we have had shortage of maize and our beloved government has never bothered to subsidize the cost of fertilizers to a sensible level, give farmers incentives, revive and put up more irrigation schemes or any other measures to counter the perennial maize shortage.

This is leaving our country in a very tight place. 'What exactly is happening????'

Among the causes for high cost of living from various reliable sources are: taxation, mismanagement of funds at the local level, climate change, Kenya's underproduction of staple items which has placed it dangerously at the mercy of local and global economic instability, unemployment...and the list goes on.
Now the Government has allowed imports of Genetically Modified Crop (GMOs)of Maize to save Kenyans from severe starvation that has hit the country, its willing to fork out Ksh 40 billion to import maize to offset the shortage and give millers a duty waiver. This strategy has caused a lot of debate on whether it is safe or not for human consumption. Millions of Kenyans are starving and will eat anything that is edible, their animals have died, no grass or bush to feed on and they are only left with wild fruits which is not enough. This explains why there are too many demonstrations taking place lately in the country.
 Over to you Mr./Mrs politicians..

VERTICAL SACK FARMING

So I recently embarked on a journey of farming. Yes, am now a farmer, actually I want to train people on farm smart ideas I have recently practiced and are sustainable. This is how the journey began, I was idle and then started browsing through farming ideas. That’s it, idleness brought about farming.  My latest project is this creative farm smart adventure called Vertical Sack Farming. Vertical Sack farming is a technique of growing crops in sacks filled with soil, manure, pebbles for drainage, and growing plants on the top and in holes on the sides. If you have no garden, no worries, this sack is enough to fit on your balcony. It is very suitable for urban farmers who are looking to produce their farm fresh food. Four days after planting the spinach Two weeks after planting Four weeks later the spinaches are blooming I planted spinach in the holes on the sides and cabbages, carrots and tomatoes on the top. This is one farm smart project am happy about and eager to teach and train...

ENGAGING YOUR COMMUNITY

How do you engage your community? From my experience of working with and for the vulnerable community members I must say one of the best thing you can give to someone is a listening ear, giving people time to talk about what they are experiencing can help you visualize how to help them. Getting information first-hand from the people on the ground helps you develop practical solutions to their problems. Gone are the days one would wake up and think of doing something to help people in a community without seeking their input. Community engagement is basically bringing the stakeholders of a community on board to address issues affecting their well-being, achieve sustainable outcomes, ensure equitable decision-making processes, and develop relationships. It puts people’s voice at the heart of operations and programmes and start shifting the power imbalances that existed. When engaging the community you gain the trust of the people you serve and your work becomes relevant and impactfu...
